A few weeks ago, a young man asked me how he can use social media to generate traffic. I have received this same question over the years.
How can I generate traffic to my website through social media?
The fact is you may have the most beautiful website in the world but without people visiting your website, it is almost useless. Every website has an objective. It could be that you sell your products or services through your website. You can also be a blogger who sell advertising, promote affiliate products and sell products and services using your blog.
Whatever may be the reason why you have a website, you need traffic to the website if you want to make any impact.
Like we already know, social media is huge. Facebook just announced they now have over two billion people on the platform. If we consider the share number of people using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Snapchat and so many other social networks; then you will realize how powerful social media could be in generating rapid traffic to your website.
I’m writing this blog post because I will also send it as a reference to those who will ask me how they can generate traffic to their website through social media. If you apply the techniques I outlined in this post, you can start generating as much as 1,000 traffic to your website within 7 days. It can be more depending if you intend to use free or paid methods to generate the traffic.
I’m going to start with the free ways of generating traffic from Social media.
Here are 8 Ways you can utilize social media to generate huge traffic to your website.
1) Facebook Group
Some of my Facebook friends have utilized Facebook groups to generate traffic consistently to their website and gain exposure to their business. It is free to join Facebook groups and you will be amazed at the number of exposure you can generate utilizing this technique.
The group you join will be determined by the audience you want to reach. Don’t just join any kind of Facebook Group because you want to generate traffic to your website. You need to ensure the audience that will be receiving your post are interested in your topic.
You can use the Facebook search button to search for Groups in any field.
Click on groups on the left side.
From the search result, you will find various groups for the keyword you searched for. Join as many groups as you can. Personally, I like joining groups with thousands of members and frequent update from members. That shows the group is active.
You can also study what other members are posting. Don’t also be selfish. All your post should not be about self-promotion. You need to ensure your content is providing value to the members of the group. You can add a link to your website or blog if people want to learn more.
If you are active on at least 10 active groups on Facebook, you can be sure of receiving hundreds of free traffic to your website. You can also post to as many groups as you want. I’m not sure there are any limitations to the number of groups you can post on daily basis.
2) LinkedIn Groups
Just like Facebook groups, LinkedIn also has active Groups. Most of the traffic to this blog is from LinkedIn groups. You can also utilize LinkedIn groups to promote your website and generate traffic.
First, search for the group you want to join
Join as many groups as you want within the industry you want to generate traffic from.
Then start making a meaningful contribution with a link to your website. This is one of the methods of generating traffic from LinkedIn.
Before I explain this concept, I need to sound a note of warning. Some people consider tagging as offensive but it is not illegal. There is a reason why you can tag your friends in most of the social media like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram. You can utilize social media tagging to generate buzz for your website. You just need to ensure you are not abusing it by tagging same people every day.
All you need to do is tag people on your post when publishing information on social media.
When you Tag your friends on Facebook, it will automatically appear on their profile and this enables your content reach a wider audience. Except those you tag has reviewed their Facebook account settings in which they have to approve a post they are tagged on before it appears on the profile. I can tell you that more than 90% of Facebook users don’t know that such functionality exists.
Some of your Facebook friends may have 4,000 friends while some others will have less. If on the average you tagged 50 friends that have an average of 2,000 friends, when you tag them, your post has the potential of reaching 100,000 people. That is because your friend friends on Facebook will actually see the post because it will appear on their profile. It is a powerful way of marketing your website and business but must be used wisely. Don’t go about tagging same people daily. You can tag some friends today and tag others tomorrow or next. You are the one to plan how often you want to post and how often you want to tag people.
You can also tag people on Instagram and LinkedIn.
4) Utilize Good Looking Visuals
Without visuals, social media will be boring. In order to maximize the use of social media for your brand and generate consistent traffic, you must use Good visuals. You can design the images yourself using tools like Canva.com or pablo.buffer.com.
You can also use a platform like fiverr.com to get good image designs from $5.
I repeat, without good visuals, your social media content will not attract high engagement.
5) Make Your Website Shareable
When you visit websites and you see little social media sharing icons on the site, there is a reason for that. After reading good content, most website visitors can decide to share the website link in order for their friends and colleagues to also have access to the content.
By having social media sharing button your website, you will be receiving traffic from those that shared your content on social media.
How to Grow Your Business Using Social Media that was published on this blog received over 794 shares on social media. I actually screamed when I saw that. For a two month old blog, that was some kind of traction :). I must not deny the fact that I was excited.
By allowing users to share your website and blog post on social media, you will be receiving free traffic consistently. I use www.sumo.com for the social media sharing button on this blog. Sumo can also be used on any kind of website. If you have a WordPress Blog, the following free social media sharing plugins are also great.
If you don’t know how to use these plugins on your website, ask your webmaster to help you with it. It is easy and can be setup within few minutes.
6) Add Your Website URL to Your Social Media Pages
I have seen people who do not add their website link to their social media profiles. Don’t forget people will check out your profile and if there is a web link, they can decide to click on it and check it out. You can also encourage colleagues and employees to have the business website on the social media profile. You never can tell when a big prospect will discover your website by checking out your social media profiles.
7) Be Active and Consistent On Social Media
Once a while, I do stumble upon a social media page of a brand in which their last post was 3 month or even one year ago. Why are you on social media if you are not active or do not post fresh content constantly?
The more active you are on social media, the more traffic you will generate to your website. You don’t expect to post once a month and expect thousands of clicks to your website. It does not work that way. You have to find time to be consistent in publishing content. If you are engaged with so many other activities, you can use a fantastic social media scheduling tool like Buffer to schedule content for an entire month or more on your social media profiles.
If you don’t have a flair for writing, you can as well outsource your social media content creation on a platform like Fiverr. With so many platforms and tools available today, you don’t have any good reason not to be active on social media and generate consistent traffic to your website.
8) Utilize Paid Advertising & Sponsored Content
